Getting ready for a photoshoot can be extremely overwhelming without proper preparation. As an Enneagram One and an extreme Type A list maker, I’ve got you covered when it comes to setting yourself up for success. These five simple tips will leave you prepared, relaxed, and ready to rock your next photoshoot.
1 - Find a Clean Space
Whether you tidy up your home, rent a studio, or head to the great outdoors, make sure your space is free of clutter! This ensures YOU and your brand are the focal point of your session and not last night’s dinner plates.
If you’re looking for natural shots in a home setting, I highly recommend checking out Peerspace. You can rent local homes and studios by the hour for stunning shoots of all styles without having to clean your own mess first. It’s like AirBnB for the creative and I’m totally here for it.
2 - Find a Fabulous Photographer
If you’ve already got an Insta hubby who can capture your best angles just know I’m totally jealous and you can move on to number three. If you’re looking to book a photographer, take a look at their Instagram, website, and portfolios to get a feel for whether or not they’d be a good fit.
Do they specialize in the type of session you’re looking for? eg. Branding, Family, Engagement, Wedding, etc
Does their aesthetic and editing style feel natural to your personal style?
Does their previous client work align with your current goals?
Are their fees within your current budget? If not, put them in your back pocket for when you’re ready, but please respect the value that they have placed on their services.
And if you’re in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I can tell you firsthand that Lauren Bethany Photography is pure gold when it comes to natural branding photography.
3 - Prep Your Outfits and Props in Advance
Decide on the outfits you want to wear, gather them up, and try them on. If it’s been a season since you last wore those jeans or that blazer, make sure well in advance that they still fit. If you need to order items, give yourself plenty of time for shipping and unexpected delays.
Don’t forget to choose outfits that you’re most comfortable in. If you loathe wearing shoes, don’t force them into a photoshoot. You’ll feel more like yourself and it will show.
If you’re bringing props to your shoot, pack them up and load your car the night before so you’re not rushing out the door or forgetting anything important on the day of your shoot. A collapsable rolling crate is perfect for transporting props and stores easily when done.
4 - Take Time to Relax
Speaking of the day of, give yourself plenty of time to relax and get ready. Enjoy your coffee, visualize your shoot, and take extra time to make yourself camera ready.
I started my day by rolling an ice roller on my face and neck to reduce any seasonal puffiness lingering from the night before. If you’re oily, try rolling Copaiba essential oil on your face and neck with your ice roller for added inflammatory support. Game changer, my friend.
Give yourself plenty of time for hair and makeup and travel to your destination so that you arrive early and not rushed. These simple steps will make sure you start your shoot as relaxed and natural as possible.
5 - Pack a Few Touch Ups
Must haves for me were concealer, lip gloss, and deodorant wipes. I went super light on my makeup for a more natural shoot and wanted to make sure I had concealer on hand for any quick touch ups that were needed. I reapplied my lip gloss with each outfit change — constant laughing and smiling can take a toll on you Iip gloss! And last but not least, I’m obsessed with these clean ingredient deodorant wipes from Type:A. After several outfit changes it was nice to freshen up and apply fresh deodorant before I wrapped up.
BONUS PRO TIP — Roll Valor essential oil along your jawline to help loosen your muscles for a more natural and confident smile. You’re welcome.
